Children's Karate Classes at World Oyama Karate, Chelsea

Positive experiences for body and mind

Gunner and ThomasKids love World Oyama Karate because it's fun. It's an opportunity for them to run, jump, shout, punch, kick, roll, and to give-it-all-they've-got. Parents love World Oyama Karate because it is a traditional karate environment that teaches respect, focus, confidence and self-defense skills. During class, children are expected to make eye contact, maintain good body posture and respond appropriately to the instructor. This kind of behavior is proper for karate class. In fact, these are basic skills for learning any new thing. As children discover their new talents and abilities, they also gain confidence. They believe, "I can do it." This positive attitude affects more than just a child's karate training. It becomes evident in their schoolwork and home life also.

Green BeltKarate develops a child's confidence better than team sports. Personal achievements are much more effective at building self-confidence than achievements made as a team. In a sport such as soccer, for example, a child who is not talented or experienced ends up watching from the sidelines. In karate, even those who initially lack coordination or focus can achieve quickly and feel good about themselves.

Sensei leading Children's classA study done at Carleton University found that children who train in martial arts have less anxiety, a better sense of responsibility, higher self-esteem and social intelligence, and were less likely to take foolish risks (from Psychology Today, January 1985). Additionally, Bob Schleser, a sports psychologist at the Illinois Institute of Technology, concluded from his research on children that "Karate gives a general sense of confidence and personal control."

Children stretchingWe can help your child build confidence, discipline, focus and a positive attitude. Training at World Oyama Karate is also an excellent chance for your child to be exposed to a different culture. Kids enjoy learning to count and speak in Japanese. To ensure quality instruction for each child, we group children according to age and level. Please check our class schedule to find the appropriate class for your child. Children who are 13 years and older should join our adult class.
