Why Choose Oyama Karate in Chelsea?
Several reasons exist why people choose Oyama Karate in Chelsea for their karate instruction.
Quality of Instruction: A good instructor should bring expertise, enthusiasm and inspiration to his students. Be sure to inquire about the credentials of the instructor for your class. At many schools, the head instructor is highly qualified, but your instructor might be a teen-ager, a brown belt student, or someone who needed a part-time job. At World Oyama Karate, Chelsea, the head instructor, Sensei Tetsu, teaches all classes. He is a 4th degree black belt who has dedicated the last 9 years to nothing but karate. Karate is not just his job or past-time. It is his way of life.
Curriculum: What exactly does the school teach? Kickboxing, Aikido, Karate, Kung Fu, Tae Kwon Do, a mix of all of them? You might not know the differences between these martial arts, but the school should be able explain their art to you. World Oyama Karate is a full-contact style of Japanese karate. We emphasize practical, effective techniques such as punch and knee kick, not flips and flying kicks. Also, we contact each other when we train, while maintaining a safe environment. Contact allows the students to feel the effect of one's techniques and to understand all dimensions of a fight. This is real karate! Also consider how the school teaches? Oyama Karate uses a progressive, step-by-step curriculum so that over time, you build a repertoire of techniques in addition to improving on basic techniques.
Cost: This is often the first (and sometimes only) question prospective students ask. If you call around, you will probably find that the fees at most martial arts schools in your area fall into a narrow range. So, while cost is important, it is not particularly helpful in finding the right martial arts school for you. In our experience, World Oyama Karate, Chelsea class fees are reasonably and comparably priced. Please call, email us or stop by and find out about our current class fees.
Contracts: Most martial arts schools ask you to sign a contract when you join. You are often given the choice of a 1, 2 or 3 year contract that binds you (and your money) to the school well into the future. It is very important to commit yourself when you begin a new endeavor, but you should feel comfortable with what you are committing to. At World Oyama Karate, Chelsea, new students get started with a 2 month course. After that, students renew with a 6 month course. We hope you are committed to your training, not just paying bills.
Atmosphere: Martial arts are associated with discipline, structure and respect. This should be apparent from the moment you enter a good martial arts school. The dojo should feel a little different from a gym. If not, you may still get some exercise, but you will not get the full martial arts experience. You should always visit a school you are considering joining.
Opinions of current students: The true measure of a martial arts school lies in the opinions of its students. Of course, if a student is still training at a particular school, he will have positive things to say. Is the school "great," the instructor "nice" and the classes "fun"? That's not saying much.
